You may not realise this, but the reason mountain bikes had 26" wheels for the first couple of decades of their existence is down to availability: that is what our forefathers could get. Even before the first mass-produced mountainbikes rolled off the line, there were voices in the wilderness proposing other, arguably better sizes. And eventually, they came along.
