One of the first 'extra-sportif' cycling team sponsorships, support for a team from a company outside the bike industry, came from soft-drink maker St Raphael in the early 1960s. The deal was organised by the coincidentally named Raphael Geminiani. The flamboyant ex-pro-rider reasoned that resistance to the arrangement could be countered by saying HE was the sponsor, although he was hardly a saint.
