One part of the Whakarewarewa Forest trail system that is really timeless is the native bush at the top of the highest hill. A trail snakes through that jungle for five kilometres of rooty goodness, and it is named for the tohunga (holy man) of Te Wairoa village who foresaw the great eruption of Tarawera in 1886. The new addition of a rock-strewn climb to high overlook called Top of the World makes this trail a must-do when the weather had been dry for a while.
